Boulders, bees, beds, & berms…

… a lot has been happening recently at 209 South Broadway.

Boulders

A hearty thanks to Munter Enterprises for their generous donation, including delivery, of ten boulders that will lend SoBro’s pollinator garden visual depth and drama, while also providing visitors and gardeners with perches from which to take brief stock of the emerging vitality of this formerly barren parcel.

Planning for a Spring 2024 planting

Our work with Shanti Nagel of Design Wild has moved beyond last winter’s broad-stroke conceptual planning of bed and pathway layout into detailed discussions about exactly what plants we will put in the ground next spring. The slideshow below shows these two stages of site plans, plus some photos of perennials that are on our short list.

Planting bed preparation

Before we can plant in Spring 2024, the SoBro team and volunteers have been hard at work preparing the site: laying out the beds, marking their boundaries with flags, amending the soil, and clearing out weeds.

Our new nursery bed

Thanks to our friends at the local chapter of Wild Ones, who gifted SoBro some seedlings earlier in the summer. At that point, we had no place to give them a home. Pitney Meadows Community Farm, another great partner, generously let us park the seedlings in a corner of one of their beds. At the end of September, Pitney wanted to plant in that bed, so we improvised, creating a new, unplanned nursery bed at 209 South Broadway. The small plants are doing great and will be moved to permanent homes on our site next year. Pollinators have already found them.

Berms are coming…

In a few weeks, volunteers will come together to mix and move soil and compost to create some gentle topography, adding texture and visual interest to our site.
